It's beautiful out here in the hill country.
My sockpal yarn FINALLY arrived!
It took two full weeks, but just feast your eyes on the gorgeosity of this Hill Country Yarn. Ummmm. As previously mentioned, the Pecan Tree colorway is for my sockpal, and the Hook Em Horns colors are for a friend who loves the Longhorns waaaay more than I do. Being a grad student, my school spirit is significantly diminshed from the undegrads (you just know too much about your institution now, way more than you want to, and there is no loving blindly anymore). But this is Sweet Feet sock yarn we're talking about. Even burnt orange looks lovely in merino wool.
I think I'm going to knit Straight Laced Socks from Knitty, because the directions are also a tutorial on knitting with two circs, which I really want to learn. And I like the simple lace pattern, too.
Question for you socksters: I'm a little worried about getting a good fit. Should I be concerned about negative ease? If her feet are 8 inches from heel to toe, for example, should I knit the sock 7 or 7 1/2 inches long to ensure a snug fit?

Me, I do the negative ease, but I'd lean towards 7 1/2 rather than 7. Depends how much stretch your pattern has too...
You don't know how tempted I am to order the Longhorn yarn--nostalgia does funny things to a person! Plus, how perfect would it be to knit on the plane home on FRIDAY!
Oooh, so pretty!! I have to say, I wasn't overly fond of the pic of the burnt orange on the Hill Country website, but looking at it "in person" (relative, of course) on your blog really changed my mind. It's definitely got redeeming loveliness about it! Both are so pretty! I vow that my next pair of socks will be with the 2 circs method, so I'll be following yours all eyes and ears. Hmm, I usually go 1/2" shorter to get a snug fit, but I read somewhere that if your fabric is dense enough (small gauge), you shouldn't need to do that, so now I'm not sure. BTW, your skirt looks fabulous!! Awesome job! Take care, O! :-)

The rainbow socks that I just did -- they have a plain stockinette foot and I knit them with about 1.5" of negative ease! But they fit great. My gauge was 7 sts/inch though. With a tighter gauge, you probably wouldn't need as much, as Chris said. This issue has me lying awake at night, actually.
So glad you asked the ease question. I know I've been thinking about it a lot, too. . . really interested to read what everyone else does about it.
The green yarn is so pretty, but the Longhorn yarn is just too cool for words. :)

Yummmm, I love that yarn! I'd offer you sock knitting advice, but I'm a newbie... just finishing up pair #2. Looking forward to seeing yours.

Lace spreads both laterally and lengthwise, so a bit of negative ease, maybe half an inch, is prudent. Wool tends to be more forgiving than cotton, too.

The Pecan colorway is so refreshingly different. I am interested to see how it knits up!
